Neuschwanstein Castle

Back to Germany
Neuschwanstein Castle looks like it jumped straight out of a fairy tale book! Perched high on a rocky hill in the Bavarian Alps, this magical castle was built by King Ludwig II, who was known as the 'Mad King' because of his love for fantasy and fairy tales. The castle's tall towers, pointed roofs, and stunning mountain backdrop make it look like the perfect home for a princess or prince. King Ludwig designed every room to tell a story from German legends and operas. The castle has a throne room that looks like a Byzantine church, a bedroom decorated with scenes from medieval romances, and even a artificial grotto (cave) complete with colored lighting and a waterfall! The king spared no expense, using the finest materials and most skilled craftsmen to create his dream castle. The most exciting part is that this castle inspired Walt Disney when he was designing Sleeping Beauty's castle for Disneyland! Today, over 1.3 million people visit Neuschwanstein every year, making it one of the most photographed buildings in the world. From the castle's windows, you can see breathtaking views of lakes, forests, and snow-capped mountains that make you feel like you're living in your own fairy tale adventure.
