San Francisco

Back to California
San Francisco is built on 43 hills, making it one of the hilliest cities in the world! The famous cable cars were invented here in 1873 to help people get up and down the steep streets - they're like moving museums that still work today. The city's Victorian houses, especially the 'Painted Ladies' near Alamo Square, are painted in bright colors and look like something from a fairy tale. Alcatraz Island was once a famous prison that held notorious criminals, but now it's a museum you can visit by boat. San Francisco is also famous for its thick fog that rolls in from the ocean, Chinatown (the oldest in North America), and delicious sourdough bread. The city was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake and fire in 1906, but the people rebuilt it to be even more beautiful than before.
