Santa Monica Pier opened in 1909 and is one of the most visited attractions in California. The colorful Ferris wheel can be seen from miles away and lights up the night sky with beautiful colors. The pier has a historic carousel from 1922, roller coasters, arcade games, and street performers. The beach next to the pier has soft sand perfect for building sandcastles and playing volleyball. Santa Monica is also famous for being the end of Route 66, the historic highway that stretches all the way from Chicago to the Pacific Ocean. Millions of people visit every year to enjoy the rides, eat funnel cake, and watch the sunset over the ocean.
