State Bird - Brown Thrasher

Back to Georgia
Brown Thrashers are incredible musicians of the bird world - they can learn and sing more songs than almost any other North American bird! They use their long, curved beaks to dig through leaves and soil looking for insects, berries, and small creatures to eat. These birds are about the size of a robin but with longer tails and are excellent at mimicking the sounds of other birds. Brown Thrashers build their nests in thick bushes and shrubs, usually close to the ground. They became Georgia's state bird in 1970 because they represent the state's rich musical heritage and love of nature. You can often hear them singing from the tops of trees, especially in the early morning and evening.
