Brooklyn Bridge
Back to New York
The Brooklyn Bridge was an incredible engineering feat that took 14 years to build and was the first bridge to use steel cables. The bridge's towers are made of limestone, granite, and cement, and they're so strong they could last for centuries! When it opened, people were amazed that such a long bridge could stay up - some even thought it might collapse! To prove it was safe, P.T. Barnum (the famous circus owner) walked 21 elephants across it. The bridge has a special walkway above the cars where people can walk or bike while enjoying amazing views of the city skyline. Today, over 120,000 cars and thousands of pedestrians cross the bridge every day, making it one of the busiest bridges in America.
