Times Square
Back to New York
Times Square gets its name from The New York Times newspaper, which used to have its headquarters there. Every day, about 330,000 people walk through Times Square - that's more than the entire population of many cities! The area is famous for its massive digital billboards that light up the night like a giant outdoor TV. Times Square is also the heart of Broadway, where the world's best musicals and plays are performed in beautiful theaters. On New Year's Eve, over a million people gather here to watch the famous ball drop at midnight, a tradition that started in 1907. The bright lights are so powerful that Times Square is one of the few places on Earth that can be seen from space at night!
