Statue of Liberty
Back to New York
The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to America in 1886 to celebrate friendship and freedom. She stands 305 feet tall from base to torch - that's as tall as a 30-story building! The statue is made of copper, which turned green over time because of the salty ocean air. Her full name is 'Liberty Enlightening the World,' and she holds a torch in one hand and a tablet with the date of American independence in the other. Inside her crown are 25 windows that represent gemstones found on Earth, and there are 354 steps to climb from the base to the crown! For over 130 years, Lady Liberty has been the first thing millions of immigrants saw when they came to America seeking a better life.
